Syllabus
Prerequisiti: No preparatory courses are required.
Conoscenze e abilita' da acquisire: The development of essential theoretical and basic practical knowledge and skills in General and Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry enabling students to follow the subsequent courses.
Modalita' di esame: Examinations will be organized as written tests.
Criteri di valutazione: The examination will cover both practical and theoretical learning objectives. Students are expected to gain basic knowledge in general, organic chemistry and biochemistry and to critically discuss the topics presented in the lecture sessions.
Evaluation criteria include degree of knowledge of acquired information, understanding of the structure/function relationships of macromolecules, ability to explain the mechanisms underlying the basic metabolism of the cell.
Contenuti: The course deals with the description of the structure of matter, atoms and chemical bonds. The structure and properties of molecules will be described. Basic thermodynamics will be introduced as well as chemical kinetics.
The basic understanding of the structural properties of most important biological molecules and macromolecules will be provided, and of the relationships between structure and biological functions. The structure and properties of proteins, polysaccharides and lipids will be treated, and, consequently, their capacity to perform useful functions in cells and organisms.
The structure-function relationship of biological membranes and of enzymes will be explained, enzyme kinetics, with attention on how energy is converted into cell. The most common metabolic pathways will be described.
The student will learn the principles that underlie the response of a cell to a given metabolic state, the controls that regulate metabolic transformations, and the diversity of metabolic processes occurring in different organs.
The lab sessions and practical activities cover the practical approach to biomolecular issues. After an initial biochemical training aimed at making the student familiar with key laboratory tools, the course will deal with basic experiments in biochemistry and enzyme kinetics.
Attivita' di apprendimento previste e metodologie di insegnamento: The course includes 72 hours of lectures, 16 hours of lab sessions aimed at providing basic knowledge in general chemistry and biochemistry. Class lessons will exploit Powerpoint presentations (available to students) but the blackboard will also be frequently used. Lab sessions and practical activities are based on participative interaction, with group discussion and evaluation tests
